5/30/2023 0 Comments Certain prey by john sandford![]() ![]() When the junkie who connected Carmel to Rinker blackmails the pair, for instance, Carmel tortures him with an electric drill as Rinker watches. ![]() ![]() The storyline spools out as a cat-and-mouse among the women and Davenport, with the villainesses dominating the action, sometimes in tangential scenes. Years later, the other femme fatale, sociopathic Minneapolis defense lawyer Carmel Loan, hires Rinker to kill the wife of property attorney Hale Allen, whom Carmel desires within days, she has Hale in bed. Clara Rinker's life as a murderer and mob hit woman begins when she is raped at age 16 and beats her assailant dead with a baseball bat. ![]() As if acknowledging his series' hero's unflashy demeanor, Sandford, in his 10th Prey book (after Secret Prey), allows two gleefully unrecalcitrant female antagonists to steal the show from Davenport. The vast popularity of the Prey novels is probably due, then, not so much to this dependable hero as to Sandford's clever plotting, sure pacing and fully rounded villains-as well as his smart prose. Parker's Spenser or James Patterson's Alex Cross. For all his brooding, Minneapolis cop Lucas Davenport lacks the charisma of, say, Robert B. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Dr sleep book![]() ![]() Pulling from elements of the books and the Kubrick adaptation, this is something of a complicated beast trying to reconcile the bunch. It's a shame this failed at the box office, but I suspect it had to do with the negative hype surrounding IT Chapter 2. ![]() This has the tone of The Shining and the quality, but since I watched The Shining first, it's hard to say this is on the same level. I will re-watch the film in a few years and re-access my initial review. I haven't rewarded it with the 5 star rating as The Shining wasn't an initial 5 star rating for me. ![]() The version I watched was the DC 1080 cut and I will say it's an incredible film. The filmmaker stays respectful to both King and Kubrick which wouldn't have been an easy feat considering King's dislike for Kubrick's film. Most sequels would revisit The Overlook with a new family, but not Stephen King. The book was good as it pushed past the closed doors of the original and managed to stay relevant. I honestly feel this film will grow into a cult gem like its predecessor. The film is close to the books story-line but is also respectful of the Kubrick masterpiece The Shining. Doctor Sleep is one of those rare sequels that work. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The north water book review![]() ![]() Sometimes I believe Ian McGuire is determined to gross us out. If you can stomach lines like the following about an already dead decomposing whale, you will get on with this novel: At the time ‘The North Water’ takes place in the late 19 th century, the petroleum industry was making the whale oil usage nearly obsolete.ĭon’t expect ‘The North Water’ to prettify the whaling business, not at all. Whales were eaten as meat, the whale oil was used widely in lamps, and the whale bones were used in corsets. We tend to think of whales as glorified huge fish, but they are actually mammals just as we are. Whaling was a rough ugly business but I suppose not much more disgusting than any business where animals are slaughtered. ![]() ![]() “The North Water” is a tale about a 19th-century Arctic whaling expedition. ‘The North Water’ by Ian McGuire (2016) – 253 pages ![]() ![]() Big things rarely happen overnight, and good things rarely happen as if by magic. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Hugo notre dame de paris résumé![]() ![]() From a Bakhtinian point of view, it would seem, the problem with Notre-Dame de Paris is the bleak resolution of its carnival promise. ![]() Yet the regenerative potential that Bakhtin finds at the heart of aU carnival forms, Hugo specificaUy rejects. With this deeply suggestive beginning, Hugo elects carnival as a dominant motif for his novel. ![]() In secular paraUel, the Festival of Fools upends aU worldly hierarchies. In Christian tradition, Epiphany ranks as the generative transpositional moment (the Gentile Magi adore the Christ Chüd). (Blair I)1 To reread Hugo's novel in the Ught ofBakhtin on carnival is to anticipate from this setting some inversion of the world of medieval Paris: some relocation of power, some illuminating or regenerative transposition of values. The cause ofall the commotion on the sixth of January was the double holiday of the Epiphany and the Festival ofFools, united since time immemorial. (Bakhtin, "Problem" 127) Notre-Dame de Paris begins on carnival day: On January 6, 1482, the people ofParis were awakened by the tumultuous clanging of all the bells in the city.
